The Howis Trust was established in 1869, the same year as Harrison Housing. The joining of these two organisations resulted from a recommendation from the Almshouse Association.
The buildings required extensive refurbishment and a number of residents were decanted to facilitate this work. With the help of funds from the Homes and Communities Agency the accommodation was brought up to a good standard at a cost of £1.2 million.
The scheme was re-opened in March 2011 and houses single women over the age of 50.
